Thai cat (Old-style, Traditional, Classic Siamese)

is a newly classified but old, natural cat breed descended from the cats of  Thailand (former Siam) called Wichien-maat (Moon diamond) described and illustrated in manuscripts called "Tamra Maew" (Cat Poems), estimated to have been written about 1350.

In 1884, the British Consul general Edward Blencowe Gould  brought a breeding pair of the cats, Pho and Mia, from Siam to Great Britain and named them Siamese cats. They were shown with their 3 kittens at London's  Crystal Palace  cat show in 1885. and Siamese breed started increasing in popularity in Europe since then. In 1950s–1960s many breeders and cat show judges began to favor the more slender look. As a result of generations of selective breeding, they created increasingly long, tubular, fine-boned, narrow-headed cats, with extremely big ears. Original Siamese cat almost disappeared. To preserve old type Siamese genetic pool it is classified as new breed-Thai. Standards are established in WCF in 1991. TICA in 2007 and finally in FIFe in 2014. Preossia club is established in Germany 1999 and later Thai cat clubs established in Italy, Russia and America and also International Thai Cat club.

In Serbia we have preserve old type siamese cats mostly because of the war and bad economic situation. There was no cat club, for several years. My Thai Diamond is the first Thai cattery in Serbia and Balkan countries registered in TICA association 2014. year. Only Siamese and Oriental cattery My Fortune owned by dr. Milica Tanjević kept working thru bad times. Her cats are carrying genes from Yugoslavian lines Insomnia from Croatia and BT Lotus of the famous Yugoslavian breeder Laszlo Slivka. Offspring of her cats and Thai cats of private owners I use for creating Serbian line of Thai cats. I had an insight in wide genetic potential of Thai breed thru practice in my veterinarian clinic Pet Wellness Eva. My Thai Diamond cattery is the member of International Thai Cats Club ITC and club Felis Serbica.

The appearance

Body is muscular, elegant, medium long. Head is apple shape. The profile is slightly curved, with a gentle break at the eye level. Chin and lower jaw are strong, the muzzle is rounded. The ears are medium size. They are broad at the base and set ’’at 5 min to 1’’ The eyes are almond shaped, the lower lid is slightly rounded. Eye color is an intense blue. The tail is medium in length and strait to the tip. The coat is short and glossy, close lying to the body. It has a silky texture and no undercoat.

The color

The  pointed pattern  is a form of partial  albinism , resulting from a mutation in  tyrosinase , an  enzyme  involved in  melanin production. The mutated enzyme is heat-sensitive; it fails to work at normal  body temperatures , but becomes active in cooler areas of the skin. This results in dark coloration in the coolest parts of the cat's body, tail, extremities and the face. All Thai  kittens , although pure cream or white at birth, develop visible points in the first few months of life in colder parts of their body. By the time a kitten is four weeks old, the points should be recognize which color they are. Thai cats tend to darken with age, and generally, adult Thai living in warm climates have lighter coats than those in cool climates. Originally Thai had  seal  (extremely dark brown, almost black) points, but occasionally Thai were born with  blue  (a cool grey) points,  chocolate  (lighter brown) points,  lilac  (pale warm gray) points, red and cream point, lynx (tabby) point, and  tortoise-shell ("tortie")point.

The personality

Once Thai admirer, always Thai admirer. They are very intelligent, often bonding to one person. Clearly showing their wishes and demands, but also showing love to their humans or members of their cat family. Very active, it is possible to train them to bring back the toy or to pas agility polygon. They show their desire to communicate to humans. If they are offended they punish someone they considered guilty. They can also ignore you if you leave them for longer time. Voice is strong and they produce different sounds in different situations.
